Family Activities

Hilton Head Island offers the family vacation of a lifetime for kids of all ages. There's so much fun stuff to do, you can go from mild to wild and back, way before bedtime. And the next day, you can do everything differently. It's a cool place to be!

If you're looking for adventure on the water, Hilton Head Island marinas offer these and other activities:

  • Wave runners
  • Parasailing
  • Dolphin cruises
  • Kayaking
  • Sailing charters
  • Fishing charters

Among others, we recommend Palmetto Bay Watersports at Palmetto Bay Marina or H2O Sports at Harbour Town Marina, located in the Sea Pines Plantation. Palmetto Bay Watersports offers among other things wave runner, boat and pontoon rentals with no gate fee. Call (843-785-2345) to reserve your fun today. H2O offers the largest wave riding area and all its boat captains are USCG-licensed and trained. Call (843- 671-4FUN) for reservations.

There are miniature golf courses all over the Island. Adventure Cove (843-842-9990) offers 2 miniature golf courses, and an arcade. There is also Pirates Island Adventure Golf (843-686-4001) near the entrance of Palmetto Dunes and Legendary Golf has two locations - one is near the entrance of Long Cove (843-686-3399) and the other is near Coligny Circle on Pope Avenue (843-785-9214).

A Roller Blade and Skate Park is near the Crossings Park off Palmetto Bay Road. Nearby is a playground, soccer field, and basketball courts. While there is no supervision, this area was designed as a safe and fun place with lots of pipes and ramps.

And if you're seeking calmer ways to relax with your kids, take a leisurely stroll through one of our many nature preserves on the Island.

The Coastal Discovery Museum offers guided nature walks throughout much of the year. Take a tour of the Museum and discover the rich culture and history of the Island. Please call (843-689-6767) for tours and schedules. The museum is at Mile Marker 1 as you come onto the Island. Brand new this year is the opening of their Honey Horn location which eventually will be the main home for the museum. Also located at the museum is the Hilton Head Island Welcome Center.

The Sandbox is a hands-on interactive museum filled with unique entertaining, and educational play areas to explore. Children can sail away on Captain William Hilton's ship of discovery or find their Passport to the World in the international airport terminal with a plane ready for little pilots to fly. The admission is $5 for adults and children two years and older. Children under two years are free. Located behind St. Andrews by the Sea Methodist Church on Pope Avenue, normal operating hours are Tuesday - Saturday 10am - 5 pm but June thru August they are also open on Monday (843-842-7645).

Rent bicycles and take advantage of the miles of paved trails or a ride along the coastline. They both deliver and pick-up from your rental property at no extra charge! Call Island Cruisers (843) 785-4321 for reservations.

Lawton Stables (843- 671-2586) offers horseback rides on scenic trails and even has a petting zoo and pony rides! Conveniently located in the heart of Sea Pines, they offer trail rides through the 600 acre Sea Pines Forest Preserve.

One of the best ways to see all the abundant nature the island has to offer is by getting in a kayak and seeing the ocean and waterways from eye level. Contact Outside Hilton Head (800-686-6996) about their kayak and nature tours. Or take the family on a dolphin watching tour - one delightful way is to bring your own snacks and enjoy sailing on the Pau Hana a large catamaran out of Palmetto Bay Marina (843-686-2582).

Three local singers croon to kids. Dave Kemmerly who entertains at the Salty Dog Café often invites kids to sing and dance along and has prizes for contest winners. Gregg Russell has been an island favorite for twenty five years! He performs under the giant live oak tree in the heart of Harbour Town. Shannon Tanner entertains with sing-along and onstage appearances in the gazebo at Shelter Cove. All of these entertainers are seasonal and start late May through late August.

TUESDAY NIGHTS in the summer are fireworks, fun and shopping in Shelter Cove Marina. There are always a lot of people at this event, so please remember to arrive early or be prepared for a walk from the mall or another lot to the marina.
